Xbox Boss Phil Spencer is back in Japan

By Keith MitchellJanuary 20, 2020
Phil Spencer

I wonder what he’s up to this time?

Out of nowhere, the boss of Xbox, Phil Spencer tweeted out that he’s back in Japan. Which can only mean that he’s looking to do something for the Xbox brand.

Great to be back in Japan with the team talking and listening to amazing studios and publishers about 2020 and beyond. Really strong energy and excitement here about gaming's future.

— Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) January 20, 2020

If you recall, that last time Phil made a trip the “Land of the Rising Sun”, a deal was made to bring Sega’s Phantasy Star Online 2 over to the West on Xbox (and PC) first. He also inked a deal that brought over a number of Final Fantasy games that have never graced any Xbox console:

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy VIII: Remastered
  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Final Fantasy X: HD Remastered
  • Final Fantasy X-2: HD Remastered
  • Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2
  • Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy XV

So, what is he doing in Japan, now? Well, that’s anyone’s guess. However, if I was a betting man I’d say he’s looking to bring over a few more Japanese games to the Xbox brand. With the Xbox Series X launching during Holiday 2020, it would be Xbox’s favor to get as many games as they can onto the console.

His last trip was fruitful, so let’s see what happens this time around.  Also, while this may be a coincidence, it seems that Nintendo of America’s boss, Doug Bowser, is also currently in Japan as well.

Interesting times, wouldn’t you say? I wonder if these two are planning on meeting up.
