HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ Won’t Get a Season 2, Showrunner Walks

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJanuary 17, 2020

Looks like fans of HBO’s Watchmen have some disappointing news. Damon Lindelof, the show’s creator, has officially left the show. While for some series this wouldn’t be an issue, but HBO’s programming chief Casey Bloys told USA Today that Lindelof left because he didn’t want to make a second season.

“It’s really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do,” Bloys said. “If there’s an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a Fargo, True Detective [anthology] take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether. We’re very proud of Watchmen, but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do.”

Now, interestingly, Lindelof has said that he would totally fine with HBO trying to make a season two without his involvement. HBO, however, will not be replacing him as showrunner and continuing the show for the time being. “It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way,” Bloys said.

Even the series’ star Regina King wasn’t big on doing the show without Lindelof. When asked by Vulture about starring in more Watchmen, she said, “I know that Damon doesn’t even kinda have an idea of an entry point and an ending for a second season. And I know he wouldn’t come onboard for a second season unless he did. I don’t want there to be a second season if it’s not going to at least be comparable to this first season, which is going to be really hard to do.”

So this doesn’t mean that Watchmen Season 2 might never become a reality, but at least for the foreseeable future, the show is a one and done deal.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
