Mercs mode won’t return in Resident Evil 3 Remake

The Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal in Resident Evil 3 was an unlockable mini-game that let you take control of three soldiers as they raced against the clock and blasted as many zombies as they could. It was an enjoyable time-waster if anything else, and I was hoping it would return in the remake. Sadly, that just wasn’t in the cards.

As reported via the Official PlayStation Magazine, the Mercenaries mode isn’t being brought back. Instead, the asymmetrical 4 versus 1 multiplayer mode, Project Resistance, will replace it. A game mode that many of us thought was going to be a separate game of its own. Instead, it was announced by Capcom that it would be bundled with the Resident Evil 3 Remake, when it releases on April 3, 2020.

It’s not all grim news, as Capcom has also alluded that Carlos Oliveira’s role in Resident Evil 3 may be expanded upon. As for Nemesis, well he’s learned a thing or two. The same AI that was developed for Resident Evil 2 Remake, will be applied to Nemesis. And while Mister X/Tyrant was merely a hindrance, thanks to scripted moments, Nemesis is a different beast. He pursues you, he hunts you down and he enjoys it. Now he’ll be packing the same AI as Tyrant, which will make for an interesting time when the game is released. I already have visions of the Aliens from Sega’s Alien: Isolation – that AI was merciless.

I can’t say that I’m not a bit saddened by this change. I played the Merc mode for extended periods and was looking forward to doing it again. After playing Project Resistance for a short time, I still haven’t formed an opinion on it. Hopefully, I’ll get some more hands-on with it before its release in April.

Resident Evil 3 is set to launch on April 3, 2020, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
