Netflix Cancels ‘MST3K’ Right Before Thanksgiving

By Sara Roncero-MenendezNovember 27, 2019

Wow, Netflix, wow, rudeness does not suit you.

It recently came out that the streaming service was canceling the sci-fi comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000. Not only that, the news broke on Thanksgiving week, when the show traditionally has its marathons and posts new seasons, this adding insult to injury.

Often abbreviated to just MST3K, the most recent iteration of the show follows host Jonah Ray as he must watch terrible sci-fi B-movies and riff them with the help of his co-hosts. Besides Jonah Ray Rodrigues, the show also starred Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt as the main antagonists.

The good news is that the show’s crest Joel Hodgson still owns the rights to the show, so he could work with another streaming service to get more seasons made. He even tweeted as such once the news broke:

If you didn't see the backer update, I announced today that #MST3K is not doing a third season for Netflix. It's not the end of MST3K, It's just the end of the first chapter of bringing back MST3K.

Host Jonah Ray is taking the news with good humor, commiserating with the other beloved but canceled shows of Netflix:

Netflix still has two seasons of the show available on their platform. No word yet as to whether we can expect a new season in 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
