The Last Of Us Part II Delayed Until May 2020

Say it ain’t so, Neil!

While The Last of Us Part II was originally scheduled for a Feb. 21st, 2020 release date. Neil Drunkmann has announced via the PlayStation blog that the game has been delayed. The new release date is now May 29th, 2019.

While we can already hear the frustrated cries of PlayStation 4 owners everywhere, this is for the best. While we saw a nice chunk of the game during the last PlayStation State of Play, perhaps the game wasn’t as close to being finished as we speculated.

According to Drunkmann,  “We realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality.  At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.”

So while fans are likely going to be disappointed, I agree 100% on this call. The Last of Us Part II has been hyped as a “must play” PlayStation 4 title. Delaying it a few months to make sure it can be the best that it can only just makes sense. The last thing anyone wants is for this game to be anything else than perfection.

Shigeru Miyamoto makes a compelling point.

Besides, Q1 2020 was already full with a number of AAA games being released.  It also means that’s one less game I’ll have to worry about playing while PAX East 2020 is happening. Take all the time you need, Naughty Dog. We’ll be here waiting to play it in May 2020.
