SNES games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online

By Robert DolenSeptember 4, 2019

Games from the SNES glory days are finally arriving on Nintendo Switch for Nintendo Online members, and sooner than you might expect.

The first lineup of classic games for SNES Online were announced during today’s Nintendo Direct, and are headed to Nintendo Switch Online members exclusively on September 5.

The lineup is incredibly solid too, with more on the way just like NES online:

Many of the features currently present in NES Online will carry over into SNES Online as well (save states, local and online multiplayer, cloud saves etc.), including the Rewind feature which Nintendo made sure to be present for the launch of SNES Online. And like NES Online before it, it’s included with a Nintendo Switch Online membership at no additional cost.

For those inclined to play these classics as they were meant to be played, Nintendo is also selling SNES system controller replicas for Switch as well.

SNES Controller Switch

The controllers will be sold at $29.99 apiece, and are available exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online members only. Users will presumably have to provide their membership information in order to be eligible to purchase the hardware.

It’s a relatively harmless but important distinction for those who may not have Switch Online but may still want the hardware. Luckily, Nintendo Switch Online has more than proved itself worth the price, especially considering it’s at most $4 a month, or $20 a year for a membership.

I’m mostly excited to jump back into F-Zero again, but it’ll be interesting to check out the games I’ve never had the chance to play like the original Breath of Fire. Who knows, we may even get Chrono Trigger at some point.

I'm Rob Dolen, not to be confused with Bob Dole! That's alright, I get it all the time. I play too much Super Smash Bros. competitively, but when I'm not doing that I play pretty much everything else under the video game sun.
