SDCC 2019: ‘Black Widow’ Solo Film Officially Announced

By Robert DolenJuly 20, 2019

Finally Marvel, after many rumors and press photos of the film shoot, has officially unveiled the Black Widow movie coming in 2020.

Marvel unveiled some of the first details as well as some teaser footage of the solo film during their San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday.

Depicting events prior to the first Avengers film, Black Widow is a prequel highlighting Natasha Romanova’s complicated past and how she becomes a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers.

Viewers at the panel were also treated to a teaser trailer even though the film has only been shooting for about a month. Black Widow will take place in Budapest and feature a yet-to-be introduced villain in the Cinematic Universe, Taskmaster. There’s also a new supporting character by the name of Yelena.

Scarlett Johansson will once again reprise her role as the titular hero, along with Rachel Weisz, O-T Fagbenle, Florence Pugh, and David Harbour joining the MCU for the first time. Notably, Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland, making this the first Marvel film with a female director (Captain Marvel was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck).

Black Widow releases May 1, 2020, as the first movie in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I'm Rob Dolen, not to be confused with Bob Dole! That's alright, I get it all the time. I play too much Super Smash Bros. competitively, but when I'm not doing that I play pretty much everything else under the video game sun.
