Pixar Announces ‘Soul’ as its Next Film

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJune 23, 2019

Pixar ‘s sterling reputation isn’t what it used to be after several mediocre films, so I’ve been approaching any new projects with a degree of hesitation. For every Inside Out, there has been a Good Dinosaur. That being said, their newly announced project sounds pretending promising, though can it live up to a name like Soul.

One year from today, Pixar Animation Studios will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions. Disney & Pixar’s “Soul” arrives in theaters on June 19, 2020. pic.twitter.com/SugTIzbeVp

The film’s tagline is a little vague, though what do you expect from the studio that keeps as much about their plots hidden as long as they can: “Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you… YOU.” We also know that the film will take place in New York City as well as in “cosmic realms” so there will be a fantastical element.  There is some speculation that the title is a play on the word “sol” which means sun in Spanish. It would explain the bright star in the logo, though it could also be how everything is made from the same materials that make up stars.

The film will be written and directed by Pete Docter, who wrote and  directed the classics Monster Inc, Up, and Inside Out. Already that’s a great start to the project, given that he is both a seasoned vet of the industry and responsible for three of the studio’s biggest hits. Beyond that, though, we have no information as to who will part of the cast.

Soul is set to premiere in theaters on June 19, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
