E3 2019: Espire 1 is VR’s Metal Gear Solid

By Diego PerezJune 10, 2019

Tripwire Interactive, the team behind the Killing Floor series, unveiled a VR shooter during UploadVR’s E3 showcase in partnership with Melbourne-based studio Digital Lode, but it’s a bit different from Killing Floor.

Espire 1: VR Operative aims to be the first fully-featured realistic stealth game for VR platforms. The game marries the satisfying shooting of Killing Floor with the stealth of Metal Gear Solid, and the result is a single-player, narrative-driven espionage experience.

The game has a bunch of cool VR-specific features that prove it’s not completely trying to copy games we’ve already played. You play as a robot, and this robot has magnetic hands, allowing you to freely climb any metal surface to get a better angle on situations. Also, if you manage to sneak up on an unaware guard, you can say “freeze” and hold them up. While this was a thing in Metal Gear Solid, it’s cool having to physically say the word. You can check out the gameplay shown off in the showcase below.

Espire 1: VR Operative is slated for launch sometime this year. It’ll be available on every major VR platform, including Oculus Quest, which will be a one to one experience with the standard version according to the developers.
