Winter is Coming to a Galaxy Far, Far Away: ‘Game of Thrones’ Showruners to Make Next ‘Star Wars’ Films

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMay 14, 2019

The Internet is in full fan mode as it has been confirmed, for now, that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff will be at the helm of the next Star Wars trilogy. If you have no idea who those guys are, they are the show runners for the indescribably popular HBO show, Game of Thrones.

Interestingly enough, the two writers had been tapped for quite some time – we even covered their involvement in the franchise in a story from over a year ago. What is new, however, is that the duo will helm a new trilogy, rather than just one film.

No plot is set yet other than it will have nothing to do with the Skywalkers. However, fans are speculating (or, really, hoping) that it will be about the Old Republic, going back even further into the franchise’s lore. And what a deep, deep lore it is.

Still, nothing is set in stone just yet, as the franchise is taking a break after the next movie. Disney CEO Bob Iger said as much during the MoffettNathanson Media and Communications Summit, as reported by The Wrap:

“We’re not going to wait until nine is out to start figuring it out, we’re actually hard at work doing that now,” Iger said when asked about the future of the “Star Wars” franchise. “We did a deal with David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who are famous for ‘Game of Thrones’ and the next movie that we release will be theirs, and we’re not saying anything more about that.”

Additionally, there’s no guarantee they’ll stay on the project – as we’ve seen, the LucasFilm team is not afraid to let directors and writers go, as they did with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in Solo.

Either way, it’ll be fascinating to see what these hit-makers will do with another expansive, chaotic world prone to epic battles and intense family drama. We’ll see the final product sometime in December 2022.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
