Epic Games Acquires Rocket League Developer Psyonix

By Diego PerezMay 1, 2019
Rocket League

Epic keeps throwing more and more money around to get games onto their storefront, and Psyonix, the studio behind Rocket League, is the company’s latest purchase.

Psyonix went into more detail on the acquisition on its website.

In the short term, nothing will change at all! We’re still committed to providing Rocket League with frequent updates that have new features, new content, and new ways to play the game for as long as you’ll have us.

In the long-term, we expect to bring Rocket League to the Epic Games store and to leverage our new relationship to grow the game in ways we couldn’t do on our own before. We believe that bringing Rocket League to new audiences with more support is a win for everybody.

The extra funding and resources provided by Epic will allow Rocket League‘s esports scene to grow to even further heights than before. The Rocket League Championship Series’ 7th season is coming to a close in June, and Psyonix has high hopes for what’s to come. The Epic acquisition “significantly increases our potential reach and resources,” the company wrote in the post.

Of course, being acquired by Epic means Rocket League is coming to the Epic Games Store. The game will hit the Epic Games Store later this year, and it’ll remain on Steam in the meantime. After the Epic Games Store release, the game won’t be available for purchase on Valve’s store, but those who purchased the game on Steam will still have their copy of the game supported (thanks, The Verge). Terms of the deal were not made public, but the acquisition is expected to go through near the end of May or beginning of June.

What this means for the future of Rocket League is unknown at this point. Ideally, it just means Rocket League will become an Epic Games Store exclusive (which seems to be what all the cool kids are doing these days), but there could be worse futures in store.

Maybe there will be Epic Games Store exclusive in-game content for the game. Maybe those who own the game on Epic’s platform won’t have access to cross-platform play. Nothing is certain at this point, but we’re sure to find out more when Rocket League hits the Epic Games Store in late 2019.

When he's not playing video games, Diego's talking about video games, and he does both a lot.
