PlayStation 5 Confirmed to Not Be Released Before April 2020

While financial news is pouring down like rain thanks to Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo’s quarterly earnings call, another tidbit of news came from Sony’s camp involving the upcoming PlayStation 5 console.

Sony Interactive Entertainment stated that the PlayStation 5 will NOT be coming during the next fiscal year. This means we will not have a console between now and April 2020. They did state that they are heavily invested in the development of the next generation PlayStation system, some of the specs already discussed by Mark Cerny.

Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean the PlayStation 5 won’t release in 2020. It just means we’re not going to see it before April. Sony could still unveil the console this year and launch it late next year, possibly near the holidays. Most home console lifecycles are 10 years. Right now, the PlayStation 4 is five years into that ten-year lifecycle. If you announce a console at the current one’s half-life and release it 1 to 1 1/2 years later, that gives Sony 3 1/2 – 4 years to wean people off of the PlayStation 4 and onto the PlayStation 5 which, historically, has always been the case. Shortly before a new console approaches its half-life, the previous generation becomes no longer supported

While some timelines say we won’t see PS5 until 2021 (which could still be a possibility), the chances of it getting announced this year are getting stronger, especially with the initial specs being released. Needless to say, things are taking shape for Sony’s next-gen PlayStation!
