Outerhaven Anime: First Reaction – Isekai Quartet

By Josh PiedraApril 12, 2019

We heard that you like isekais so we put an isekai in your isekai in your isekai in your isekai then put all of that into an isekai! When I first saw Isekai Quartet, my first thought was “Dear God, WHY!?” My second thought was “This is going to be the biggest shit show of the 2019 anime calendar year” My third thought was “Okay, this is going to be like a train wreck… devastating to watch yet you can’t help but turn away.” My final thought after watching the first episode was…

Let’s Go!

First Impressions

The plot isn’t really that deep. A red button appears in the worlds of Konosuba, Overlord, Saga of Tanya the Evil, and Re:ZERO. They push the button and poof, they appear in another world together where they are placed into a classroom.

I wish I could elaborate more but that’s the exact the plot line. I warned you that it wasn’t all that deep.

Out first episode is simply an introduction to our characters and the worlds they come from. The episode ends with some teacher stating that their class is about to begin.

I should also mention that this show is not going to require a lot of time investment as the episodes are only 12 minutes long. Subtract the opening, ending, studio credit fluff, etc… then you’re looking at around 9 minutes worth of actual content. It’s not a huge time investment and the interactions of all of our chibi-fied characters were rather cute and entertaining.

The interesting part for me is that I have seen Re:ZERO and while I haven’t seen Overlord, I am reading the manga so I am familiar with both. I have not seen Konosuba or Saga of Tanya the Evil so these characters and their references will probably get lost on me… or they’ll actually inspire me to get into these series so I know just what the hell they are talking about.

Overlord and Konosuba got the main bulk of attention in the first episode while Tanya and Re:ZERO received the least amount of screen time.

Worth Watching?

MAYBE – While I was pleasantly surprised by the first episode, I wouldn’t exactly call this a must-watch show. If you’re a fan of even one of these shows, it may be worth your time just to see your favorite characters in some additional content. If you’ve seen and liked all four of these shows then this is Valhalla itself. Dig in and be merry. I’ve only seen two so I’ll keep watching just to see how enjoyable this ends up becoming but so far this looks to be a typical comedy show with tongue-in-cheek reference jokes to all their respective series and nothing more than that. I’m not expecting a super deep plot here so everything should be taken with a grain of salt. Given the small time investment required to watch each episode, even if it ends up as total and complete trash, it’s short enough to suffer through it until the very end. I mean, I watched all of Pupa because those episodes were only 5 minutes long and I’m still here and perfectly mentally sound.

For the most part…
