‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ Show Gets a Reboot on Netflix

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMarch 3, 2019

Prepare yourself for peak 1990s nostalgia, for one of the most popular girls franchise is coming back. Yes, The Baby-Sitters Club will be getting a reboot on Netflix.

For those of who don’t know, the book series was written by Ann M. Martin.  It followed the adventures of friends and teenaged baby-sitters Kristy Thomas, Mary Anne Spier, Claudia Kishi, Stacey McGill and Dawn Schafer in the picturesque town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut. Lessons were learned, friendships were made, and kids were sat. And like all beloved franchises, it’s coming back around.

“The themes of The Baby-Sitters Club still resonate 30 years after the original book series was released, and there has never been a more opportune time to tell an aspirational story about empowering young female entrepreneurs,” said Melissa Cobb, Vice President of  Kids and Family at Netflix to The Hollywood Reporter. “Together with Ann M. Martin and the team at Walden Media, our ambition is to contemporize the storylines and adventures of this iconic group of girlfriends to reflect modern-day issues.”

“I’m amazed that there are so many passionate fans of The Baby-Sitters Club after all these years, and I’m honored to continue to hear from readers — now grown, who have become writers, editors, teachers, librarians, filmmakers — who say that they see a reflection of themselves in the characters of Kristy and her friends. So I’m very excited about the forthcoming series on Netflix, which I hope will inspire a new generation of readers and leaders everywhere,” Martin added.

There’s no news as to when we can expect the series to come out, but there’s no casting done nor is there a director/showrunner tied to the project. Still, with over 100 novels, there certainly won’t be a lack of storylines to choose from nor characters to feature.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
