microsoft has announced the successor to their augmented reality headset… and no, it’s not HoloLens One X. They decided to stick to conventional numbering and called it HoloLens 2. The device was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Microsoft said that they have improved upon the initial product and cited that the new HoloLens will be more realistic, vibrant, more immersive, have greater comfort, and a better time-to-value. In addition to these improvements, HoloLens 2 doubles the field of vision over the original and has improved eye-tracking sensors. While all the technological improvements sound great, the end product of interacting with the holograms have also been upgraded as well. They accomplish this with a new time-of-flight-depth sensor as well as advance AI understanding and learning.
This allows for users to interact with holograms in the same way they would with real objects in the world.
The new hardware uses a lighter carbon-fiber material to reduce strain from wearing it. In addition, it has a more balanced center of gravity.
If you’re looking to score one yourself, just know that this will set you back by $3,500. If you do have that cash on hand, HoloLens 2 will be available later this year. You can even go ahead and pre-order it right now if you’re daring enough to do so.
