‘Star Trek’ Animated Show in Development at Nickelodeon

By Sara Roncero-MenendezFebruary 15, 2019
Star Trek

The age of Star Trek continues! The franchise has gotten a boost on TV thanks to CBS All Access’s Star Trek: Discovery. There is even going to be another show where Jean-Luc Picard, played once more by Patrick Stewart, is now in the works. Now the franchise is going to be expanding outside of All Access with a show on Nickelodeon.

According to Variety, an animated show aimed at a kid audience in now in development. There are few details yet, but we do that it is being written and developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman, who have worked on Hotel Transylvania, The LEGO Movie, and Trollhunters. There is also currently no working title.

This isn’t the only animated show in the pipeline. CBS All Access also has Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated show geared towards adults. It’ll take a look at the life of the support crew on one of Star Fleet’s not-so-famous ships. It is being led by Rick & Morty writer Mike McMahan. “As a life-long Trekkie, it’s a surreal and wonderful dream come true to be a part of this new era of ‘Star Trek,’” McMahan told Variety. “While ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ is a half-hour, animated show at its core, it’s undeniably ‘Trek’ – and I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program.”

Of course, animated content is nothing new for this franchise. Star Trek: The Animated Series ran on NBC from 1973-1974, and utilized the majority of the actors from the original series. It’s generally remembered as a camp-fest with some hilarious poses that make for great memes. Still, it’ll be interesting to see what kinds of new stories are told, and how it changes the way we see this classic universe.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
