‘Riverdale’ Spin-Off ‘Katy Keene’ Gets Pilot Order from CW

By Sara Roncero-MenendezFebruary 2, 2019

If you’ve been paying attention to news from the Archie-TV universe, you know there’s been talk of a mysterious third spin-off show in the works. Between the two high successful branches of Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, many wonder who was going to get the spotlight next. Turns out, it’s Katy Keene.

Who is Katy Keene? Good question, I didn’t know either. The character debuted in 1945 and was a glamorous college student and model living in NYC. She’s all about the good life, has a boyfriend named K.O. and generally seems kind of flighty and fun.

The show has been briefly summarized as a musical dramedy of Katy and her three friends trying “to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio.” How this is going to work into a series, I have no idea, but given the dark shift they did with Riverdale, there might be some fun surprises in store. Still, I just hope it’s not another Gossip Girl copycat – it feels like that era of the channel is well and firmly dead, as it should be.

The CW has ordered a pilot, though some have assumed it’s all jut a formality given how popular the Archie-universe shows have become. And yes, there is the possibility of crossover here, unlike Sabrina, though the show will take place years after the events of Riverdale.”If any Riverdale characters come to Katy Keene, they’ll come as their older selves,” Mark Pedowitz, The CW president, said at the 2019 TCA winter press tour.

There’s no word yet as to casting, nor is there any idea when the series might make its TV debut.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
