Could the Black Widow Movie be the MCU’s First R-Rated Flick?

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJanuary 28, 2019

If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting on a Black Widow movie since the first Avengers movies. And we’ve been made to wait…a lot. But it finally looks like the studio is getting on it, with filming to begin February 28th. But rumors abound – could the Black Widow movie get the honor of being Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie?

The rumor started back with a blind item posted to Hollywood rumor blog Crazy Days and Nights. And while it’s not proof enough for the big outlets to be carrying it, or confirming it yet, there has been a lot of chatter on geek-news sites.  The blog also mentions that Marvel is reportedly banking on the strategy that if it is a flop, they can blame it on it being a female-led, female-directed film. And while that is certainly not uncommon, it’s also weirdly sinister for a studio that made Guardians of the Galaxy happen.

Having an R-rated film for Black Widow would make a lot of sense. After all, as a spy she would have to deal with a lot of violent, dark situations. No definitive mention as to whether the film will be taking place during the events of the MCU, like all of the post-Avengers solo films have up to Captain Marvel, or if this one will also be a blast back to the past.

The film will be directed by Cate Shortland, an Australian director who has had a lot of success with indie thrillers. Scarlett Johansson is, of course, reprising her role as Black Widow, though we don’t much else about the rest of the cast yet.

The untitled Black Widow film will likely premiere in theaters sometime in 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
