‘Venom’ Sequel in the Works with Original Screenwriter

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJanuary 8, 2019

Venom may not have been a critical darling, but money talks in Hollywood, and what it’s saying now is “sequel.” That’s right, a Venom sequel is currently being developed, and with Kelly Marce the original screenwriter, getting the script in shape.

Little is known about this project, but The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the $855 million that film brought in globally has the studio looking into producing a sequel. While nothing about the plot has been confirmed yet, most likely Cletus Kasady, Venom’s archnemesis played by Woody Harrelson, will have an expanded role. Tom Hardy and Michelle Williamson are both expected to return to their roles.

Ruben Fleischer, the first film’s director, is believed to be involved in the project as well, but there is no official word yet as to whether or not he is going to be at the helm. In terms of confirmed producers, we have Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal.

No word yet as to whether or not this sequel will come out after/incorporate any aspects from the Morbius the Living Vampire movie that is being developed at Sony with Jared Leto in the lead role. It seems like Sony is trying once again to build up a Spider-Man cinematic universe, but how exactly their collaboration with Marvel on the current run of films will play into this remains a mystery. Still, Sony is likely happy to hedge its bets given that both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse did exceptionally well for them financially.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
