Batwoman Gets Pilot Order At CW

By Todd BlackJanuary 4, 2019
Batwoman Elseworlds

The CW has become THE place to get live-action DC Comics series (sorry DC Universe, they’re more established than you right now). Anyway, they already have Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning, all of which do rather well in the ratings (in regards to the channel and its viewership). And now, via the Elseworlds crossover, we’re officially getting a Batwoman series…potentially.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the Batwoman solo series (which was rumored before Elseworlds arrived last December) has gotten a pilot order. To be clear, this is NOT a series order. A pilot order is one that allows the company to produce a single episode to visualize its intent for the series. That’s why if you look at certain pilots, and then the second episode, you’ll notice some major changes, as the second episode is filmed long after the pilot in most cases.

But, given the talent on the Batwoman pilot, that may not be an issue. First, there’s  showrunner and writer Caroline Dries, who worked on the long-running CW series The Vampire Diaries. Then ther’s Greg Berlanti, who’s on as Executive Producer and has been a part of every DC/CW show out there. And finally, there’s David Nutter, who you might know from Game of Thrones. He’ll be directing the pilot, just like he directed the pilot to both Flash and Arrow, and both of those got picked up obviously.

Ruby Rose (who made her debut in Elseworlds as Kate Kane/Batwoman) will be starring in the pilot, proving that the CW and Warner Bros were happy with her performance in the crossover. We even have a small synopsis of the series:

“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane [Rose] soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

If the pilot is picked up, it’ll go to series and possibly debut on the CW this fall. Although, given the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” Crossover they already announced, they could pull a Black Lightning and have her debut season be a little shorter and yet still have her in the crossover. It all depends on what the timing allows.
