Pixar Announces Next Original Film: ‘Onward’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezDecember 17, 2018

If you hadn’t already heard, Pixar’s next big feature is Toy Story 4, continuing the saga of the secret lives of playthings. And while that’s an exciting prospect, many were hoping the studio would also be throwing in a new, original project. Well, have no fear because it has been officially announced: Onward.

The story is a so-called suburban fantasy, meaning it will feature all of your favorite mythological characters but also technology. The plot will revolve around “two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there.”

“At Pixar we try to create stories that come from some kind of personal truth,” said director Dan Scanlon in a press release. “This film was inspired by my own relationship with my brother.”

The film has some big name stars already attached to it, like Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer. And yes, two of those people are from the MCEU, meaning that the two brothers in this movie and (probably) Star Lord and Spider-Man.

Sadly, we don’t have many more details beyond that and the cover art (see above). Still, it’s nice to see the studio doing something original rather than trying to push out yet another sequel.

Onward is set to premiere in theaters March 6, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
