Horror Hit ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism’ Gets Film Adaptation

By Sara Roncero-MenendezNovember 21, 2018

Nothing screams the 1980’s like leg warmers, scrunchies, and exorcisms. Oh, you don’t remember those? Well get ready for a blast from the past with the upcoming adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s nostalgic horror novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism.

The film rights to the book were bought by Endeavor Content, the entity behind Killing Eve and Colette. And in the producer’s chair is Christopher Langdon, best known for his recent horror comedy Happy Death Day. Unfortunately, we don’t know if Langdon will be directing but his style would be a good fit for the horror novel’s overall vibe.

If you’ve never given this book a look, here’s the official synopsis from Goodreads:

Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fifth grade, when they bonded over a shared love of E.T., roller-skating parties, and scratch-and-sniff stickers. But when they arrive at high school, things change. Gretchen begins to act…different. And as the strange coincidences and bizarre behavior start to pile up, Abby realizes there’s only one possible explanation: Gretchen, her favorite person in the world, has a demon living inside her. And Abby is not about to let anyone or anything come between her and her best friend. With help from some unlikely allies, Abby embarks on a quest to save Gretchen. But is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

My Best Friend’s Exorcism isn’t the only Hendrix property that’s being adapted fo the screen. His first horror success, Horrorstor, is being developed as a TV show by Josh Schwartz and Gail Berman, though there’s been no word as to when that is supposed to premiere.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about this upcoming project.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
