Following the recent cancellation of Marvel and Netflix’s ‘Iron Fist’ show, ‘Luke Cage’ has also been shelved after just two seasons.
The hero with the bulletproof skin has arguably been one of the better Marvel and Netflix shows. Especially when it comes to both ratings and reception. So it’s a bit puzzling and surprising when the statement that was made earlier today that confirmed the cancellation of the show to multiple outlets.
Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” Netflix and Marvel Television said in a joint statement.
This statement reads exactly like the one that was released when Iron Fist was canceled.
Sure, the first season of Luke Cage dragged on a bit longer than it should have. However, season two delivered the goods. A villain that could stand up to Cage, a city in turmoil, a redemption arc, and a fall from grace. It had everything and when it all ended, everyone was sure that a third season was a sure thing. I’m still shocked that we won’t see a third season. I really wanted to see what was in store for Luke and the gang after he went all Mr. X on everyone.
This leaves only ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Dare Devil’, and ‘The Punisher’ as the only Marvel series left on Netflix. And as we have seen within the past week, nothing seems to concern when it comes to the Marvel properties on Netflix. Here’s to hoping that we eventually See Luke Cage’s return on Disney’s streaming service, which would be a Sweet Christmas for everyone. Or even better, how about teaming him up with best friend and brother in arms, Danny Rand and bring us all what we’ve wanted from the start – A Heroes for Hire spin-off. I mean, who doesn’t want to see that?
My take on this all? At the end of the day, I’m still not convinced that these cancelations are a coincidence. Nor will they be the last. With Disney already working on their own digital streaming service and with the announcement that all Disney properties will be moved over to this, eventually. Surely these are part of some conflict between Marvel and Netflix, it has to be. And what better way to effectively kill whatever deal or contact but refusing to work with each other. Both are Juggernauts in the media industry and both have more than enough money basically pay off each other.
Of course, that’s just my two cents. Either way, the only people that lose out are the fans of the show – fans like myself.
