Everything You Should Know About Nintendo Switch Online

By Clinton Bowman-ChristieSeptember 12, 2018

Nintendo Switch Online is set to debut on September 18, and we here at The Outerhaven want to make sure you have everything you need to know about Nintendo’s entry into the paid online gaming space!

What is Nintendo Switch Online?

Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s entry into online gaming as a service, much like Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Nintendo Switch Online will require users to pay for access to online servers for games such as Splatoon 2, ARMS and Mario Tennis Aces, as well as the ability to access cloud save backups for select games.

How much will Nintendo Switch Online cost me?

If you choose to pay monthly, Nintendo Switch Online will cost US$3.99 for a one-month subscription, US$7.99 for a three-month subscription, and US$19.99 for a full year subscription. There is also a family option for US$34.99, which gives yearly access for up to seven family members. Nintendo will also offer a 7-day free trial for new subscribers starting next week.

What is Nintendo offering with Switch Online?

As mentioned previously, Nintendo Switch Online features online play access and save data backup in the cloud, both applicable to select games. Nintendo Switch Online also gives you access to a library of Nintendo Entertainment System titles with updated features such as online competitive and co-operative play. There will also be more games added to that library on a regular basis.

NES games with online play? Which titles will be available at launch?

Soccer, Tennis, Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, the Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Bros. 3, with more to be revealed at a later date.

I also heard about an application for Nintendo Switch Online. Tell me more!

Okay, okay. So the application is designed to “enhance your online experience” for compatible games. Splatoon 2 players got a taste of what’s to come when the game released. Voice Chat will be available through the application, as well as several enhanced features for select games. The application will be available for iOS and Android-powered devices.

Is there any more information available? I’m not one hundred percent sold.

Sure. Nintendo has provided a short explanation on the services and you can check out that video right here. Of course, there’s also a lot more information over at www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service.
