Nickelodeon to Publish Two ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Novels

By Sara Roncero-MenendezSeptember 9, 2018

The world of Avatar may not be getting anymore series for now, that doesn’t mean the franchise has gone silent. Comics about the continuing adventures of Aang and his friends are still happening, the soon Legend of Korra will be getting a comic series of its own. But now fans have even more to look forward to, as Nickelodeon has teamed up with Abrams Children’s Books to create a two-book series about the life of Avatar Kyoshi.

For those unfamiliar with Avatar lore, Kyoshi was an avatar from the Earth Kingdom, who preceded both Roku and Aang, and formed two important groups in the Earth Kingdom: the Kyoshi Warriors and the Dai Li.

F.C. Yee, the author of The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, will be writing the books. The first book, The Rise of Kyoshi, will look at the origins of the character and show her rise to power. The second book, which is currently untitled, will likely look at her declining years. Show creator Michael Dante DiMartino will also be involved in the project. The books will be published through Abram’s YA branch, Amulet Books.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Michael Dante DiMartino, Nickelodeon, and critically acclaimed author F.C. Yee to add to the canon of Avatar: The Last Airbender,” said Andrew Smith, senior vice president and publisher of Abrams Children’s Books told Entertainment Weekly. “Bringing Kyoshi’s previously untold story to life in original novels will be a major pop culture event, not only for fans of the show, but also for readers hungry for a new epic YA saga. The Rise of Kyoshi has all the hallmarks of what YA readers love — bold storytelling set in a rich landscape with a strong heroine at the forefront!”

The Rise of Kyoshi is scheduled to be available in bookstores on July 16, 2019, and is currently available for pre-order.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
