Slighty Mad Studios announces Free to Play racer: World of Speed

Most people know the team over at Slightly Mad Studio’s from some of their racing games such as Need for Speed: Shift 1&2 and their upcoming crowd sourced sim racer Project CARS. However it seems they we’re ready to yet again throw their hat into the racing arena with the announcement of a new free-to-play racing game called “World of Speed”.

Basically think MMO’s meets racing and you’ll get the idea of what the game will be like. World of Speed will include both real life cards, locales and will including tracks such as England’s Brands hatch, as well as in city tracks. Slight Mad Studios has stated that the game will also  include live online events, challenges and Slight Mad Studios will also introduce new cards, modes and courses as the game progresses.

World of Speed introduces a new level of connected competition allowing players to team up and compete in an ever-expanding number of gameplay modes where completing team-based objectives determines the victor. Being the first to cross the finish line no longer guarantees your victory; it’s all about the Team! Players can also team up with friends and other players to form Clubs where they can customize their logos, earn access to a Club garage social hub, compete against other clubs, show off in the Airfield Playground and battle in high-stakes races in Territory Wars.

For more information and to sign up for the World of Speed mailing list, head on over to the official website.

Currently Slighty Mad Studios plans on launching a closed beta this Spring with the actual game launching sometime in 2014 for PC.

That said I’m pretty excited for this, especially since it looks like they’re using car models from their Project CARS development, but at the same time I’m worried. This has been done before with EA’s Need for Speed World and that wasn’t received to well. Only time will tell.
