Chris Pine Plays Scottish Royalty in Netflix’s ‘Outlaw King’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezAugust 20, 2018

If you don’t know more about Scottish history other than Braveheart and Mary Queen of Scots, then you’re missing out on a whole bloody history. Scottland fought against England for a long time to be free, and one of it’s great champions was King Robert I, aka Robert the Bruce. Netflix is taking this epic story and bringing it to its platform, with Chris Pine playing the famous medieval monarch, in Outlaw King.

Outlaw King follows Robert the Bruce after he is deposed by English King Edward I, so that he and his family are chased as outlaws. However, Robert amasses an army of fellow Scots and fights back against Edward I, and then his son Edward II, by taking back castles bit by bit. And in case you were wondering, yes, Robert does get a happy ending, though I won’t spoil how exactly.

As mentioned before, Chris Pine plays our Scottish king, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (the MCU’s Quiksilver) plays knight James Douglas, and Florence Pugh as Robert’s wife Elizabeth de Burgh. Astoundingly, this film has five writers, including its director David Mackenzie, best known for another Chris Pine film Hell or High Water. The film will first premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in early September, so we should know by then how worthy it is to join our Netflix’s queues.

Pine as also been in the news recently after walking away from negotiations to reprise his role as James T. Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek 4. So far, there is no news of him returning, and some are speculating that the film could indeed be made without him.

Outlaw King will debut on Netflix and in select theaters in November 9, 2018.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
