‘Metal Gear’ Movie Director Celebrates Series’ 31st Anniversary with Update on Film

The Metal Gear movie has been in development for a long time. For a while, it seemed like it wouldn’t happen. Eventually Jordan Vogt-Roberts came on board to direct and development has since picked up steam. The Kong: Skull Island director recently provided an update on Twitter. Or rather a lack of an update that is in and of itself an update. Convoluted? Well, this is Metal Gear we’re talking about.

Over the past 31 days, Vogt-Roberts has tweeted out various videos and concept art, such as the Metal Gear Rex piece by Nick Foreman. Why 31 days? Well, he posted the first video on July 13th, marking the 31st anniversary of the Metal Gear franchise. It should be noted that the concept art does not represent what will be in the film, which make sense since there have been pictures from all different points in the series’ history. In the final tweet, Vogt-Roberts shared a video featuring some fan favorite characters (and spins on famous dialogue from the series). David Hayter came back to reprise his role as Snake. He crams in as many references as he can before thanking the fans in honor of the series’ 31st anniversary. Ocelot then provides an update, or rather says he can’t give us one. Despite not giving a lot of info, the video is a lot of fun, so check it out here:

If it wasn’t already evident, Vogt-Roberts is a big fan of the series himself. The posts primarily show his enthusiasm for the series and likely aim to reassure fans that progress is being made. While he didn’t give many updates, he did confirm to Gamespot that the script is finished. Vogt-Roberts wrote the script along with Derek Conolly, who wrote the scripts for both of the Jurassic World movies. The film is being produced by Avi Arad.

It’s interesting to note that the videos make frequent mention of Hideo Kojima, who Konami infamously parted with. Metal Gear is still owned by Konami, yet Vogt-Roberts has no qualms with giving Kojima the thanks he’s due. Likely because the film had already gotten the license years ago. On top of this, Vogt-Roberts brought back David Hayter for the videos, who had likewise been unceremoniously replaced in the last game. For fans who missed him in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, it should be a treat to hear the original voice of Solid Snake. Maybe he’ll even get a cameo in the film?
