Ruby Rose Has Been Cast As The CW’s Batwoman

By Jacob SmithAugust 8, 2018

The casting for the CW’s upcoming Batwoman appearance has drummed up a menagerie of reactions from all across the board as Ruby Rose is set to don the cowl in a crossover event later this year. The network reportedly has its sight set on a standalone series named for the titular hero.

The actress of Orange Is the New Black fame rose to the forefront of the public eye in the show’s third season and has since become a universally recognizable name and face. This star power is a likely reason the network signed her on for the potential standalone series, as well as the fact that she is openly lesbian- a match for the character of Kate Kane’s Batwoman. The latest addition to DC’s lineup of televised characters will make her debut in the Arrow, Supergirl, and The Flash crossover event this December.

The announcement has made waves among fans, to say the least. If the show is picked up for a full series it would be a huge win for the LGBTQ community, as Batwoman would feature the first openly gay lead superhero on television. There are those of course who have their doubts about Rose’s acting prowess given the limited range of her previous roles and the complexities which naturally accompany any member of the Bat Family. Some fell for her immediately as Stella Carlin on Orange Is the New Black, and others will need some more convincing.

Batwoman seeing the light of day probably rests primarily on two factors: Rose’s performance in the crossover event and writer Caroline Dries’ script for the show. Dries is known for her work on Vampire Diaries, so make of that what you will.

For now though, all we can do is wait in anticipation to see whether or not The CW lets Batgirl emerge from the shadows.
