SDCC 2018: What is DC Universe and how much is it going to cost us?

We’ve heard about DC Comics’ entry into the world of streaming with DC Universe for a while now. But what exactly is it, what’s it going to cost us and how can we get access to it?

Well, that’s we’re going to talk about. Let’s do this!

DC Universe, as mentioned, is DC Comic’s first streaming platform. Its goal is to eventually be the home for all of DC Comic’s content, both live-action, animated and everything under the sun. As we’ve seen, Young Justice Season 3 will debut on the platform, as will Titans, Harley Quinn, Doom Patrol, and Swamp Thing. Older shows like Batman Beyond, Batman: TAS and Justice League will also make an appearance. Yes, even those older DC Comics flicks that you grew up with will be accessible. You’ll even be able to purchase comics, merchandise and more from the service.

As for pricing, a standard monthly subscription will run you $7.99. There will also be an annual subscription priced at $74.99, which is a $20 dollar savings.

As of right now, you can head over to DC Universe and sign up for an account right now.  Here’s what signing up right now will provide.

  • Annual (12 months) + 3 additional months free
  • A chance to win 2 tickets to the US premiere of Aquaman – subject to official rules
  • Available on all your favorite devices
  • Unlimited access to films & TV Series plus comics and more
  • Daily news program and members-only merchandise
  • A chance to win prizes and attend exclusive experiences
  • 20% savings vs. monthly
  • 7-day free trial

The service will be accessible in several different ways. A web-based portal, as well as iOS and Android devices. Meaning that your Apple TVs, Amazon Fire TVs, Nvidia Shields, Google Chromecast will be able to stream the service to you. No word if this service will make its way to Smart TVs, like Samsung’s and LG’s units. Hopefully, it will.

Lastly, the service will be available later this Fall 2018. Can’t wait that long? Well, there’s sign-up for a beta, over at https://www.dcuniverse.com. Just scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your email address. If selected, you’ll be able to try out the service before it’s rolled out to the public. Good Luck!

All in all, the service definitely seems promising. All my favorite DC Comics stuff in one location? For one price? Yep, I’m looking forward to this and if you’re a DC Comics fan then you should be too. If I was Netflix, I might be a bit concerned if this is pulled off right.
