Github Has Entered Into An Acquisition Agreement With Microsoft.

It has been reported the software giant Microsoft has agreed to purchase the popular coding site GitHub. While a value of purchase has not yet been revealed, the company is currently valued at $2 billion while it was booking $200 million per year from their annual subscription service. Some of the companies that have been using GitHub for coding purposes are Microsoft themselves and Alphabet/Google.

Update: Github has confirmed that they have entered into an acquisition agreement with Microsoft. At this point, the company is pretty much sold. https://news.microsoft.com/2018/06/04/microsoft-to-acquire-github-for-7-5-billion/

GitHub is a website used by programmers and software developers to store, share code, and collaborate with other developers. They currently play host to 27 million software developers working on 80 million repositories of code. Microsoft has been interested in bolstering its programming tools and services and this acquisition would fit in nicely with those goals in mind, especially with Microsoft interested in building more open-source software.

A little under a year ago, GitHub’s co-founder, Chris Wanstrath announced that he planned to step down, the company had been searching for a new chief executive and has yet to find one. This acquisition would certainly alleviate that pain of finding a replacement for Wanstrath.

An announcement for the deal could be announced as early as Monday, June 4.
