A ‘Clarissa Explains It All’ Continuation in the Works at Nickelodeon

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMarch 19, 2018

It’s no secret – people love to watch the things they loved as kids, and it’s become a very solid marketing strategy for TV networks. Disney brought back famous staples with shows like Girl Meets World and Raven’s Home, which have done well for them so far. Nickelodeon is getting on the same boat and bringing back one of their most beloved 90’s shows: Clarissa Explains It All.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nickelodeon is working on bringing back the show with the titular Clarissa playing the mom of the family instead of the teenaged daughter. And yes, before you panic, Melissa Joan Hart could be reprising her role as quirky and cool Clarissa Darling. Series creator Mitchell Kriegman is in talks to write and executive produce this new show. The deal, however, is not done just yet.

Clarissa Explains It All had a success five season run from 1991 to 1994, and was replayed on Nickelodeon well throughout the rest of the decade. The show did have a sequel that was developed, called Clarissa Now, but was never picked up by the network and thus lost to the annals of TV history. Kriegman also published a novel about Clarissa figuring out life in her 20s in 2015, called Things I Can’t Explain.

It’ll be interesting to see the character as a mom, still trying to maintain her fun, witty attitude while wrangling her kids. One has to wonder if such a show would stay true to the original’s essence or if it will bend to the trends of today. Either way, I hope they make more of those weird but totally radical video games for Clarissa to take out her frustration on.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
