Capcom on Monday announced that Monster Hunter: World has shipped over 7.5 million copies (physical and digital) since its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launch on January 26th. Despite Capcom’s claims, this statement just isn’t true, unless you do some “math.”
Capcom’s previous bestseller, Resident Evil 5 moved 7.3 million copies. This only accounts for the original release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. If you account for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC release (Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition,) Monster Hunter World would still be behind Resident Evil 5 in terms of overall sales. However, this may change with the incoming PC version of Monster Hunter World, which is due this fall, reaching an audience of gamers that don’t play on consoles, further driving sales. MHW did claim January’s #1 spot for U.S. game sales, despite only being on the charts for 4 days.
Notwithstanding the weird math, Monster Hunter as a series has now sold 48 million units since 2004, when Monster Hunter debuted on the PlayStation 2.
