The Trailer for ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Finally Jumps into Hyperspace

By Sara Roncero-MenendezFebruary 5, 2018

At last, what many fans have long waited for is finally here: a look at the highly tumultuous final product of the Solo: A Star Wars Story production.

We see in the trailer a young Han Solo, recently kicked out of flight school, gets drafted into a group of ragtag low-lifes by Beckett, Han’s mentor played by Woody Harrelson. Lando Calrissian, played by Donald Glover, will also be a part of that team along with Thandie Newton in an unnamed role. Emilia Clarke plays Qi’ra who appears to be Solo’s love interest for the film, given their interaction in the trailer. According to the plot synopsis, this film will also show us how Han met Chewbacca, his closest friend and first mate.

It’s been hard to avoid the news ever since the original directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, were fired from the project, only to be replaced last minute by Ron Howard. There were also rumors that LucasFilm was not pleased with the performance of their star, Alden Ehrenreich, and it’s not hard to see why that might be true. In the trailer, Ehrenreich doesn’t quite capture the original swagger of Harrison Ford’s performance, and their looks and voices are so different, it’s hard to remember you’re watching the same character.

However, the overall look of the film is spot on for a space noir story. There’s plenty of high speed spacecraft chases and battles, lots of gritty settings, and more than a few shoot-outs. If anything, it’ll be a treat to see some new planets, aliens, and people roaming around in the Star Wars universe.

Here’s the teaser spot from Superbowl LII that preceded this trailer’s release, showing Han interviewing to work for the Empire, most likely part of the aforementioned mission:

Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres in theaters on May 25, 2018.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
