John Carmack departs from ID Software for good

By Keith MitchellNovember 23, 2013

John Carmack, co-founder of the ID Software aka “The House of Doom” has officially parted ways with the company. Back in August of 2013 he joined the Oculus VR team as it’s CTO and it was speculated at that time that he had quit ID Software, only to find out that Carmack was going to split his time between both the companies instead. Things didn’t pan out as it seems now.

Carmack posted on his blog regarding his officially leaving ID Software stating;

I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn’t work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging.

When asked about the future of any current or future titles that would be affected by this, ID Software director Tom Willits stated that Carmack’s depature would not affect any current projects, so it would seem that he and the company are taking this well.

I’ve been playing games developed by Carmack and ID Software since I first got into PC gaming or gaming for that matter since I was a child, I cut my gaming teeth on titles such as Wolfenstien 3D, Commander Keen (How many of you still remember this?), Doom and Quake, so to see ID Software basically disbanding with Carmack’s departure following John Romero, American McGee. Tom Hall and Sandy Petersen. It’s sad to see him go as he definitely was the driving force at ID Software but at the same time the work he’s helping with at Oculus VR will be / is ground breaking and the company will only benefit from having Carmack 100% on board now.
