J.J. Abrams Returns to TV with New HBO Show, ‘Demimonde’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezFebruary 4, 2018

Lost was a TV phenomenon, even though the the ending left many fans feeling a little left out in the cold, and Fringe took lots of weird turns. Still, sci-fi aficionados have been wondering just what the weird and twisted mine of J.J. Abrams would bring us next. The wait is almost over — the writer/director/producer is teaming up with HBO to bring his latest creation to the small screen, a drama called Demimonde.

Shopped as a spec script, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama focuses on a female scientist, her husband, and young daughter, who are then involved in a terrible car crash. When the mother falls into a coma, the daughter digs into her work and finds her way to a new world where she must help to fight a dark, oppressive force, along with her father tagging along. HBO gave Abrams a straight-to-series order, so he will write the first season, but no word yet as to whether or not he will direct.

This isn’t the only collaboration between Abrams and HBO. He will also be executive producing Lovecraft Country, a horror anthology series from Jordan Peel and Misha Green based on the book of the same name by Matt Ruff.

Many speculate that this attempt to bringing in brilliant directors and writers to HBO is a means of keep viewers as the mega-hit Game of Thrones finally comes to an end. Big Little Lies and Westworld both have strong followings, but the channel knows it best not to rest on its laurels. It is likely that Demimonde will be a part of the 2019 offerings from HBO, but that also depends on how long it will take Abrams to bring everything together, given that he is also working on Star Wars IX and the next installment of the Cloverfield franchise.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
