Elgato Ceases Production Of Their Original Capture Card

By Keith MitchellJanuary 6, 2018
Elgato Capture HD

The end of an era

Elgato’s entry into the gaming market was thanks to their original capture card. The Elgato HD was an amazing device that enabled gamers to start recording but also streaming their gaming sessions. It’s been six years since that device hit the market, but it feels like only yesterday.  It has since been one-upped by newer models, such as the HD60, HD60 S, HD60 Pro and the more recent, 4K60 Pro.

As such, Elgato has announced that they have retired the Elgato Capture HD device.

Having empowered content creators for almost 6 years, it’s time to say goodbye to the GOAT, Elgato Game Capture HD, as it goes end of life.

But what does EOL mean exactly? Basically, the Capture HD will no longer be in production. However, all is not lost Elgato will continue to support device for the foreseeable future. Elgato will also keep supporting the device in their Game Capture software (not the 4K utility). You’ll even be able to get a replacement unit, assuming that your HD Capture is under warranty.

But don’t let this news discourage you from picking up an HD Capture if you’re looking for a cheap capture device. It still puts out a respectable 1080p/30fps for capture and streams. Not to mention, it’s one the few capture devices that support capturing from Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. That said, I can only assume that due to the EOL, these are going to up in price. If you can find one, that is.

Good night, sweet prince. You were my first capture device and you allowed me to do so many amazing things. You won’t be forgotten.
