While Amazon’s FireTV devices can do many things, browsing the internet hasn’t been one of them. Well, that all changes today as Amazon has finally given their media devices a more requested upgrade.
Starting today, You’ll be able to browse the internet with both Firefox and Amazon’s own Silk browser. The direction pad will handle scrolling around the screen while using Alexa’s voice command is helpful for quickly searching for random stuff.
I’ve tested both Firefox and Silk and while they’re a bit on the slow side, both are working ok. There are some downsides.
Firefox has issues with rendering websites correctly. YouTube videos use a different player and missing out on several controls. The voice sliders are replaced with a simple mute/un-mute option as well. Firefox also doesn’t have the ability to bookmark pages or saving passwords just yet either. The Silk browser, on the other hand, doesn’t exhibit any of those issues. It’s a tad faster, websites are rendering properly and the videos are using the same player that we’re used to for YouTube videos.
So there you go. You can finally browse the internet with the FireTV devices. That is, without slide loading unofficial apks them.
