Netflix Buys Sean Bean’s Horror Series, ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezDecember 12, 2017

Even though the Dark Universe never became a thing, that doesn’t mean classic monsters are officially out. Case in point, Netflix has bought The Frankenstein Chronicles, a horror mystery show starting Sean Bean.

Originally airing on ITV’s Encore channel, The Frankenstein Chronicles follows John Marlott, a war veteran and river policeman, who is investigating the case of a corpse made up of body parts from different children. Of course, sinister forces are at work in the dark streets of 19th Century London and it’s up to Marlott to bring it to light.

ITV has just finished airing the second season, but will soon be shutting down Encore, so many of its properties are getting bought. Another Encore series, Harlots, was bought by Hulu. It’s not so easy with this show though, as the show’s distributor, Endemol Shine International, is already licensing the series in various regions. Either Netflix will need to wait to stream the show, or only stream it in regions where it is not currently licensed.

The biggest question is will Netflix make a third season of the show. The most likely answer is yes, given that there would be no point in purchasing the property outright if they weren’t going to do something with it, but there’s been no confirmation on that front so far. And who knows, maybe Bean won’t die in this one!

Netflix has been on an announcement streak, with The Punisher getting a second season, She-Ra getting a re-boot on the service, House of Cards is moving on with its sixth season and Jessica Jones is coming back in 2018.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
