FX, Sony Pictures Television to Adapt ‘Welcome to Night Vale’ for TV

The popular horror podcast, Welcome to Night Vale, is headed to television as a series, courtesy of a developmental deal between FX and Sony Pictures Television.

Gennifer Hutchison, one of the executive producers of Better Call Saul, will adapt the podcast into television format under her current deal with Sony Pictures Television.

The critically successful podcast, Welcome to Night Vale, will be adapted to television by FX.

Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, the creators of the podcasts and authors of the Welcome to Night Vale book, will also be executive producing the series.  In addition, Harper Perrenial has signed up with Fink and Cranor to publish new script books for seasons three and four of the podcast. The companion texts will feature guest intros by the authors themselves and the cast members, as well as original illustrations by series artist Jessica Hayworth.

We’ve never met anyone in the industry who understands our world and approach to storytelling better than Gennifer does. We are lucky to be working with her, as well as FX – a network with a long history of creating excellent television.
– Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, Creators of Welcome to Night Vale

The first two seasons of the podcast, which started in 2012 after Fink and Cranor met through the New York Neo-Futurists theater group, were previously published as the script books, Mostly Void, Partially Stars (Vol. 1) and The Great Glowing Coils of the Universe (Vol. 2.)

So many readers have passionately embraced the Welcome to Night Vale novels and script books. I can’t wait to see the same enthusiasm for what I’m sure will be an amazing television series from Gennifer [Hutchinson] and FX.
– Amy Baker, VP/Associate Publisher of Harper Perennial

Currently, there is no timeframe set for the debut of the Night Vale television series.

Editor’s Note: So our Television and Film Managing Editor, Sara Roncero-Menendez, introduced me to the Night Vale universe, and while I’ve only recently started listening to the podcast, with the Welcome to Night Vale book on deck to read down the line, I am all in for this experience. Adapting a podcast to a television format isn’t a new thing, as both LORE and Comedy Bang Bang! were both quite successful adaptations in their own right. I say, let’s do this, FX. I can’t wait to hear more about the show as it’s developed.
