‘Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card’ Trailer Rekindles the Shojo Magic

By Sara Roncero-MenendezDecember 1, 2017

For many, Cardcaptor Sakura is a source of pure nostalgia for 1990’s shojo. Well, CLAMP heard the wishes and pleas to continue the story by making a sequel to the series, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, which has been turned into an anime.

We see the main character Sakura Kinomoto is moving on to junior high school, and Syaoran, her love interest, coming back to the town of Tomoeda. Everything seems to be going great, until one night she discovers that all of the Clow Cards have gone blank, or “clear,” and she gets a new key design. As before, Sakura dreams of a mysterious hooded figure who seems to threaten her and the Clow Cards. There’s even that dark final line: “When I captured all the card, it was the beginning of the end.”

It looks like, once again, our spunky protagonist is going to have to recapture all the cards once again, continuing to grow her magical powers as the successor of Clow Reed. All of our favorite characters are back, though there are quick glimpses of some new ones. There’s no hint if the events of Tsubasa Chronicles and xxxHolic will have any effect on the events of the arc or if any references will be made. It looks like the same sweet tone will persist, but perhaps with more maturity.

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card is set to come out sometime in Winter 2018. It will be subtitled/dubbed by Funimation and streamed on FunimationNow. No word yet if it will be a simulcast.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
