Spider-Man Spinoff ‘Venom’ Starts Filming

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 24, 2017

Of the many popular characters in the Spiderman universe, few are quite as popular as Venom. Now, the character will be getting his own spinoff film, with filming starting yesterday.

Tom Hardy, who’s played such iconic characters like Bane and Max Rockatansky, will be playing Eddie Brock, the journalist who is the host to the symbiote. The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott and Scott Haze, though none have been identified in specific roles. Ruben Fletcher, known for his work directing Zombieland, is currently directing this R-rated foray into an extended Spider-Man universe. The film will not be connected to the Spider-Man happenings in the MCU, and it’s not clear if Spider-Man is even going to be in it (or if he is, who will play him).

There are rumors that Brady will be using performance capture rather than being in a live-action suit. This makes sense, considering the symbiote’s powers tend to have it moving in non-natural ways off of its host. Still, one can only hope we don’t get a repeat of the terrible CGI suit from Green Lantern.

This isn’t the only project currently in works in this potentially new cinematic universe. There’s also a Silver Sable and Black Cat film in development, going under the title Silver & Black. It’s hard to be optimistic about a film and budding franchise we know so little about. Let’s hope Sony finally figured out how to do this right.

Venom is set to premiere in theaters on October 5, 2018.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
