‘Beetlejuice 2’ is Now a Reality Almost 30 Years after the Original

By Clinton Bowman-ChristieOctober 15, 2017

Warner Brothers has its eyes set on the sequel to the 1988 cult classic, Beetlejuice, with writer Mike Vukadinovich heading the scriptwriting for the sequel.

Beetlejuice 2, a project that has been in the works with the pairing of Tim Burton and Michael Keaton at the helm, comes after the limited re-release of the original movie. Deadline reports that Burton and Keaton are excited at the idea of collaborating on the project. The duo is currently working on Dumbo at Disney, and there are no deals reportedly near finished for the two.

The original Beetlejuice featured Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as ghosts who haunt their old home. When a little girl (Winona Ryder) unleashes the mischievous ghost (Keaton,) the ghosts attempt to drive the homeowners (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones) out of the house. Beetlejuice also spawned an animated series, which aired from 1989 to 199 on ABC and FOX Kids as part of their Saturday Morning lineups.

Back in 2016, Michael Keaton previously believed that the sequel wasn’t going to happen:

No. Zero. You always hear things, that this is happening, and people seem to know more about it than I do… It’s possible that ship has sailed. The only way to do it is to do it right. So much of it was improvised and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can’t get close to that, you leave it alone.

In 2015, Winona Ryder, who is starring in Netflix’s original series, Stranger Things, stated the opposite to Seth Myers on his late night show:

Um, I think I can confirm it, because Tim Burton… like. it was very hush hush, top secret and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said ‘Oh yeah we’re doing it and Winona’s going to be in it’ and I was like [does the human equivalent of this emoji :O ].

There is currently no release window for Beetlejuice 2. Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions are slated to produce the movie.
