The CW is Developing “Roswell” Reboot With a Twist

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 13, 2017

Beloved sci-fi teen drama Roswell has all the hallmarks of a cult classic: a complex plot, big original ideas, and a swift and somewhat pre-mature cancellation which didn’t squash its popularity. The CW is looking to expand its nerd clout by bringing to the back on the airwaves, with some minor differences.

For those not in the know, Roswell is a show about teens living in Roswell, New Mexico, who discover that there are not only aliens among them, but that they too are interested in this thing called love. The show is based on a popular series of young adult books called Roswell High, by Melinda Metz. It originally aired on The WB, before moving to the now defunct UPN for its third and final season.

In this new reboot, the show will connect to bigger themes of immigration and home. The protagonist will be the daughter of undocumented immigrants, and will, of course, fall in love with an alien who was a former teenage crush. However, as before, forces will threaten to get in the way of their blooming romance. It is interesting to see the new show integrating social concerns of the day in their new show, though how well they’ll explore them, we’ll have to see to find out.

Carina Adly MacKenzie, who worked on The Originals, will write and executive produce the show, along with Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank of Amblin Television, Lawrence Bender and Kevin Kelly Brown. Amblin is also working on rebooting Amazing Stories for Apple.

There is no word yet as to when (or even if) we will see this Roswell reboot, nor has there been any new about the cast.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
