X-Men Gets Creepy in “The New Mutants” Trailer

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 13, 2017

It seems like everyone wants that sweet, sweet X-Men money – first Legion, followed by Logan, then The Gifted, and now the latest film spinoff, The New Mutants.

As we see in this newly released trailer, we see several teenagers being “treated” in a dark and dreary hospital, but something is very clearly not right. The mutants are being treated by Dr. Cecilia Reyes, who likens them to baby rattlesnakes and is seen taking samples from them. Each of the five mutants, Mirage (Blu Hunt), Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Sunspot (Henry Zaga), Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), and Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), seem to discover creepy happenings in this hospital of sorts. While we don’t get to see any of the cast directly using their powers, there’s definitely something weird going on. Fire, faces, weird flashbacks and screaming,

Sources now cite that the movie will be somewhat loosely based on the famous “Demon Bear” saga, with said Demon Bear being the main protagonist. Without giving too much away, the run deals with issues of identity, trauma, grief, and isolation, which definitely plays itself out in the trailer. A source working on the film described it as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes-style horror movie,” which we see the first half of in the trailer. As for the second part of that sentiment, Josh Boone will likely be able to bring the teen drama in his role as director, as he also directed the massive teen drama hit The Fault in Our Stars.

Don’t think that this is going to be your typical X-Men flick, as Boone tells Entertainment Weekly: “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

The New Mutants is set to premiere in theaters on April 13, 2018.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
