Nintendo: “Don’t Pay More Than $80 For SNES Classic”

By Keith MitchellSeptember 11, 2017

Reggie Fils-Aime urges you not to pay more than $80 for a SNES Classic

SNES Classic Edition

While Nintendo has yet to grasp the concept of producing more units of their popular systems to meet the demands, it seems like they’re at trying to do so. Or at the very least, this is what they want you to believe. The recent news from the Nintendo camp, more specifically from NOA president, Reggie Fils-Aime, is that those who want to get their own SNES Classic shouldn’t have to pay more than $80 to get one.

“I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites”

If you aren’t sure what he’s referring to, it’s the sheer amount of SNES Classics that are currently up for sale on eBay and other sites. He goes on to mention that the SNES Classic isn’t suffering from the same issues as the NES Classic. It isn’t about supply, apparently. Yet, he mentions that the pre-orders are outside of Nintendo’s control. I”m sorry, Reggie, but I don’t buy that. Not after how the NES Classic was handled.

Most retailers have learned their lesson and are only selling a specific amount – likely from the number of units they’re being told they are receiving. And who provides those numbers? Yep, Nintendo. So how is this not a supply issue when they’re “trying” to adhere to the number they’re being told. When the pre-orders first started, they were gone in minutes, in some cases, seconds. If they oversell the SNES Classic, they are the ones who look like the bad guy. While Nintendo continues to say that “they’re bumping up production” and that is isn’t a supply issue.  If it wasn’t, shouldn’t people be able to pre-order one, right now? Only except, they can’t! That seems like a supply issue to me.

Thankfully, I already have a pre-order for my SNES Classic, so I don’t have to run around town or online like a maniac. For everyone else, I’m not 100% sure I can take what Reggie is saying at face value – I’m sure you’re in the same boat. You can either believe him, save your cash and hopefully, Nintendo comes through for you. But if he’s wrong, that system that you may have picked up for perhaps a much higher price might end up with someone else.

The SNES Classic releases on September 29th, 2017 in North America. With it comes a vast selection of premium Super Nintendo titles such as Contra III: The Alien Wars, Super Castlevania IV, Super Mario World, and the unreleased Star Fox 2.
