J.K. Rowling’s “The Cuckoo’s Calling” Coming to BBC One

By Sara Roncero-MenendezAugust 22, 2017

J.K. Rowling may be best known for incredibly popular Harry Potter series, but that’s not the only series she’s known for. Under the pen-name Robert Galbraith, she wrote the Cormoran Strike series, a tale of a gruff London detective and his plucky assistant who solve dark mysteries. Now, with the popularity of the books, BBC has created a three-part mini-series covering the first book, The Cuckoo’s Calling.

The book introduces us to our two main characters, Cormoran and Robin, and delves into the mysterious death of model Lula Landry. Strike is played by Tom Burke and Robin is played by Holliday Grainger, with Michael Keillor directing the three parter.

There will be four other parts to what is being dubbed the Strike series, which will cover the second and third novels in the series, The Silkworm and Career of Evil, respectively. The show will first air on BBC One and then will premiere later in the United States on HBO, which acquired the rights to the show.

The trailer gives us a good look at the characters and the basic plot, and it feels a lot like many other British detective dramas. I was surprised that Cormoran looks so young – I expected him to be a more grizzled, older man, especially considering how jaded he acts in the book. Still, the trailer looks very faithful to the book, which is a plus considering the hit-and-miss job the Harry Potter films were.

Strike – The Cuckoo’s Calling will premiere in the UK on BBC One on August 27, 2017, with an as-of-yet unknown American airdate sometime in the near future on HBO.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
