There’ll be no next generation for me just yet

By Keith MitchellOctober 9, 2013

Consoles that is. After the initial hype wore down and of course way after I had put down $500 on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, I sat down and did some soul searching. Do I really need a next generation console, let alone two of them? Now I’m sure there are many more of you out there thinking the same thing as well so before I go into my little speech about this I’ll let it be know again that while I mainly play games on my PC, I enjoy all GAMES! Console, handheld, mobile, etc. If it’s a game that i enjoy I’m going to play it.

That out of the way I can sincerely say that the initial releases for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One don’t really excite me. Sure I was looking forward to Killer Instinct 2, but that was mainly due to me growing up with the original Killer Instinct and I’ve been waiting for a sequel for many, many years and I’m 36 now. However I really don’t play fighters like I used to and I don’t like playing fighters on-line and may of my friends have disappeared or don’t like playing me *Cause they always lost to me*… ahem. Other than Killer Instinct there hasn’t been anything else that I was really looking forward to since most of the games are either multi-platform or won’t be coming out until 2014 or later. For example, really want Destiny (Curse you Bungie for not bring this to the PC) as I loved the universe they created with Halo and they definitely hurt their heart and soul into their games, however again that doesn’t come out until 2014 and there’s no actual confirmed date. Another title I want, The Division will also hit the PC so I’m covered.

Even titles on the current generation are looking for appealing than their next gen counterparts. I mean just look at this list; Grand Theft Auto 5,  Beyond Two Souls, Gran Turismo 6, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, Need for Speed Rivals, Final Fantasy X HD, Batman: Arkham Origins, Sonic Lost World, Super T.I.M.E. Force, Call of Duty: Ghosts, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Watch Dogs…..man I’m out of breath here. I’m not even going to go into all the Indie game goodness that’s spread out until the end of 2013,

And don’t even get me started on accessories. $50 – $60 for a controller? I’d hate to be a house hold with multiple gamers… oh wait, I am and that’s exactly a factor that I’m not ready for. Especially that my other house gamers are under the age of 16 and are constant either lose my PS3 & Xbox 360 controllers or throwing them around.

Point being gang, next generation is going to be fantastic I have no doubts about it. However it’s not ready yet, not now. There’s no killer app so to speak that says “Buy Me”. It’s your money and I’d never tell anyone want to do with their cash but I do ask that we as gamers think before we leap. Maybe I’m a little jaded I’ll admit that but I just don’t see the need to take the plunge just yet. That said will I take my money off the preorders I have? That’s still gray. I know I’ll definitely take it off the Xbox One, I really don’t need any more entertainment devices in my house Microsoft. The Playstation 4, I’m still not sure but I’ll more than likely take both of them off and build me a box for the upcoming SteamOS. Hey at least I’ll be able to pretend by hooking up a Playstation 4 or Xbox One  controller to my PC / Steam Machine.

Yep I said it. I’m 100% honest gang, I enjoy…. no I don’t, this thing is heavy, taking my PC into my family room and playing all the games I have on Steam and Origin on my couch with my wireless Xbox 360 controller on a 55 inch TV. This is perhaps why I’m jaded as I have everything I need right now but you aren’t me. You need to decide what works  best for you, what’s best for you wallet and most importantly, what you enjoy.

I’m an older generation gamer and by that I mean I grew up around the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis and every console after them. Those days seem to be the stuff of legends anymore as you had simpler times. You had a system that offered several games, many which were must have’s and if they didn’t they at least had one game that you simply must have. A fellow by the name of Mario rings a bell for me. Now that guy, he knew how to sell systems. Now anymore it’s really had to have that killer app, that must have title, especially on launch day. Sure some systems eventually get them but later on in the system’s life. What happened to that “Must have day one” game?

Game on, think smart and have fun! Isn’t that what its supposed to be about anyway?
