‘The Disaster Artist’ Gets Its First Trailer

By VeronicaJuly 18, 2017

The Disaster Artist tells the story of the making of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room – regarded as the best worst movie ever made. Wiseau’s notoriously bad acting and directing has gained The Room a cult following, despite being a financial disaster back in 2003.

James Franco directs and stars in The Disaster Artist as Wiseau, alongside Dave Franco and Seth Rogen. In the trailer, we see a reenactment of one of the film’s more infamous scenes (and there are many), complete with bad set pieces and green screen. We also get a first look at Franco’s Wiseau impression, bizarre accent and all.

The Disaster Artist is based on the 2013 book of the same name by Greg Sestero, Wiseau’s costar in The Room. Sestero’s book details his friendship with Wiseau, as well as the anger felt on set among actors and crew. Production for The Room was months behind schedule as scenes were constantly rewritten and sets were built and rebuilt. Many cast and crew members dropped out of the project due to their frustration with Wiseau.

The Disaster Artist premiered at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival and was positively received. It opens in select theaters on December 1, and receives a wider release on December 8.
