New Fullmetal Alchemist Manga Being Drawn for Film

By Josh PiedraJuly 13, 2017
Fullmetal Alchemist

Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, will be drawing a brand new manga for the popular franchise for lucky attendees of the live-action movie. This will mark the first time new material for the manga has been created in nearly seven years.  The manga will only be able to be obtained by attending a theatrical screening of the movie in Japan. There is no information on just how many copies of the work will be available nor how long the manga will be offered to theater goers.

The live-action movie is slated for a December 1 release in Japan and has had several movie posters produced along with an updated trailer. The new posters and trailer features characters such as Maas Hughes, Roy Mustang, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Hawkeye and Winry in costume.

The movie looks to tell the story of Fullmetal Alchemist in one go. Despite shrinking the story down to fit a film format, director Fumihiko Sori stated that they are looking to follow the source material as close as possible. Hiromu Arakawa herself described the story of the movie as follows:

In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and his leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Equipped with mechanical “auto-mail” limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his and his brother’s bodies…the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.
